Also known as the City of Bones, Citadel Ghirlandaio was a self-contained Fortress City not too far from the modern-day site of Sanctuary.
Originally designed as an agrarian society, dedicated to life without magical interference, the citadel is constructed primarily on a raised archipeligo.
Over time, the citadel expanded into it's current state of raised plateaus with help of rich ore deposits in the ground. With the more affluent members of it's society living higher, the underclass lived and worked in it's myriad network of tunnels beneath ground.
At an unknown time before the calamity, the site became famous for their autonomy from the magical council and the great feats of engineering their artisans could produce. When these machines turned to weapons, the mages intervened.
With the aid of magical dampening fields, the magisters could not assault the castle directly. A decision was made to parley with Ghirlandaio's de-facto leader,Solios Geld. When he arrived to negotiate however, it became clear that neither party had intended to talk. Quickly cutting their would-be assassins down, they turned on Geld; transforming him into a skeletal monster of hideous proportion.
Geld's new form made short work of his citadel and by the time he was defeated, the city was in ruins.
The skeleton of Solios Geld remains in the uninhabited ruins, a grim reminder of the power and influence of the Mages.
